Chandra Binayak (चन्द्र विनायक)

Chabahil Ganesh Temple, also known as Chandra Binayak Ganesh Temple, is located in the busy southwestern part of Chabahil, near Chabahil Chowk in Kathmandu. This temple is regarded as one of the four famous Binayakas of the Kathmandu Valley, believed to protect the valley from all directions. Lord Ganesh is one of the most widely worshipped Hindu deities, and it is customary to begin all auspicious works by first worshipping Ganesh. This Binayak is also known as Raktabinayak.

Built in the pagoda style, the temple houses a small but very attractive black idol of Ganesh, shown in a rare form with two arms and a serpent posture. According to the Devmala genealogy, worship at this temple is believed to cure various illnesses, including problems related to the hands, feet, wounds, and skin diseases.

The wooden tundals of the temple are beautifully carved with images of Ashta Bhairav and Ashta Matrika. In front of the temple are idols of Betal and sleeping Narayan. Within the temple premises, there are eight inscriptions, several small idols of gods and goddesses, as well as sattals and patis for rest and shelter.

Since a chaitya is also present within the temple premises, this site is regarded as a meeting point of Hindu and Buddhist traditions. The temple is believed to have been built around 1650 AD. With its deep historical roots, religious importance, and harmonious blend of traditions, Chabahil Ganesh Temple remains one of the most respected and vibrant places of worship in Kathmandu.
