Bhuwaneshwari Temple (भुवनेश्वरी मन्दिर)

Bhuwaneshwari Temple is an ancient and important shrine located on the left side of the road leading to the west gate of the Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu. Built in the pagoda style, the temple is known for its artistic design and attractive structure. In front of the temple are idols of various deities, including a Shivalinga and Hanuman, while on the right side lies a historic knowledge pond, adding to the cultural value of the site.

The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhuwaneshwari, meaning the Goddess of the Universe, and is considered one of her ancient temples in the Pashupati area. The goddess is closely connected with Tantric traditions and is associated with the ancient priest Banddu Datta Acharya. Bhuwaneshwari is one of the Das Mahavidya goddesses, a revered group of ten powerful goddesses worshipped in Hindu Tantric tradition. Nepal has a long tradition of worshiping these goddesses, such as Banglamukhi of Patan Kumbeshwar, Chhinnamasta of Rajbiraj, and Tripurasundari of Dolakha and Dhading.

A major festival connected with this temple is the Trishul Jatra. According to local legend, in ancient times, demons troubled the people living around Pashupati by taking away their children. To end this terror, the locals organized the Trishul Jatra, symbolically piercing the demon children between the spikes of tridents and parading them through the city while shouting curses. This act marked the defeat and removal of the demons. Even today, the Trishul Jatra is observed to remember this victory and to protect the community from evil forces.

With its rich history, Tantric significance, and unique traditions, Bhuwaneshwari Temple remains an important religious and cultural site within the Pashupatinath area, preserving the deep spiritual heritage of Kathmandu.
