Bhandareshwar Mahadev (भण्डारेश्वर महादेव)

Bhandareshwar Mahadev is a highly important and ancient Shiva temple located near the famous Pashupatinath temple complex, in Sifal, along the banks of the Bagmati River. This temple is believed to be older than Pashupatinath itself and holds a special place in the rituals and traditions of the Pashupatinath area. The temple houses a rare single-faced Shiva lingam, which is considered unique and powerful.

Bhandareshwar Mahadev is regarded as the storehouse of offerings for Pashupatinath. Traditionally, the daily worship of Pashupatinath begins only after the required worship materials, such as flowers and offerings, are received from Bhandareshwar. Priests also take their oath at Bhandareshwar Mahadev before starting rituals at Pashupatinath, showing the deep ritual connection between the two temples.

According to belief, Lord Kubera, the god of wealth, installed the Shiva lingam at Bhandareshwar Mahadev, giving the temple its role as a sacred storehouse. Because of this, the temple is seen as an important spiritual center in Shaivite worship, where the cycle of devotion for Pashupatinath begins.Though Pashupatinath is a vast and world-renowned complex dedicated to Lord Shiva as Pashupati, Bhandareshwar Mahadev stands as a separate yet deeply connected shrine, holding great historical, religious, and spiritual value. More than just another temple, Bhandareshwar Mahadev is a foundational shrine that supports and completes the sacred traditions of the Pashupatinath area.
